Who are some graphic designers who applied philosophy to their work and motives? Paul Rand? Saul Bass? Who are the people I need to know about?

Danke ;) I'm just a self-taught kid wanting to learn more.

i don't know fate but i dig where you're coming from.

there are the whole art vs pragmatism paradigms but i sense you are trying to look deeper than that...

    hmmm?

Like those that had progressive ideas, that saw graphic design as more than just selling Toothpaste and Tampons.

Just graphic designers? or designers in general, cause most of the old designers had their hands in more than one pot. There are quite a few good theorists, practicioners from back in the day Kandinsky, Le Corbusier, Rietveld, Tischold, brockman, Eames, the futurists, man the list goes on. I mean those mentioned go out the realm of graphic design but it's all tied together. You should pick up a genral design history book get familiar with some names and take it from there.

This is a good general history book.

All the great graphic designers and movments had a philosophy. Look at design history. THere is no comprehensive graphic design history book, but the best by far is "A History of Graphic Design," by the late Phillip Meggs.

Just saw another post about this and figured I'd suggest something:

Ogilvy put this book out years ago and I think it still holds well with philosophy surrounding advertising. He did the first campaigns for VW and thas what initially got me into him. He really is a marketing/advertising genius. This book mainly balances your design schooling.
