"We, the owners of previous models of the Apple iPod (1G/2G/3G), believe that we have been snubbed by Apple. With each new generation some or many of the new features added are only software changes, and could be easily added to past iPod’s with a firmware update. But instead of updating older iPods, Apple has simply ignored older users.
We believe that any new improvements that can be added via firmware to the older generation iPod’s should be instituted "

Ekard; ok i signed up but how do i get this ink off my screen?

I don't understand it as well. It is to me perfectly logical that a company, especially with such a loyal customer base as Apple, is giving its customers the best they can offer. Like the battery life could be 3 to 4 hours longer, like with the new models, by just updating the software.
But I agree that it is hopeful wishing

haha
sorry - i hate mac a little this morning... spent alot of money on a flatscreen... only to find out a day later that it had like 10 dead pixels on it... and they wouldn't take it back or fix it...
"too bad, most do that over time" - mac "expert"

E_____, don't you think that would be the incentive to go an buy the new model?????
oh wait... profits are stupid, i forgot.
- E__________0
mitsu: I agree that it won't be the best thing to do for Apple in the short term. But in the long term it gives me an incentive to not buy an IPod anymore and go for a player from a company that does give free updates.
And there's no point in becoming agitated over something like this. If you don't agree give some arguments or just ignore and move on.
- mitsu0
not agitated, only curious as to whether you've thought this all the way through. and i seriously doubt anyones going to abandon ipod for reasons like this. apple has some of the most loyal patrons of any brand i know.

So are we assuming that its not a hardware issue that they don't offer these updates to the old versions?
I have an older version but I'm not about to sign a petition on assumption.
Some proof that these updates would work on the old versions would be great.
- E__________0
True, that's why I think this is a good initiative. You expect something like this from Microsoft or for that matters most other companies.
And like I said, its dead hope and timewasting and stupid, but so are some of the comments that people have given so far.
- E__________0
No that's the whole point. At the launch of verstion 4 Apple has stated that the hardware, including the battery, has not changed from the third version. Making it an software change, which can be implemented in at least v3
