Just installed Nortons 8 OSX and I can't restart -- keep gettiing grey-out screen and restart instruction half way through startup sequence. Anyone have any ideas on how get around this and uninstall Nortons (assuming Nortons is the problem)?

norton sucks and only works (sort of) on pc. get disk warrior.
try holding comd, option, p and r all a the same time whilst restarting. might have to zap the pram.

if you must, you can always run norton from the cd by holding the C key down while the computer starts. maybe you can do that and run a diagnostic, making sure you have the right HD selected as a startup disc.
installing norton is bad news :(

Tech Tool Pro seems to be the choice of Apple now (they include Tech Tool Deluxe on the Applecare CD). You can get a competitive cross-grade from Norton Utilities to Tech Tool Pro.
If you do use Norton Utilities, make sure you run live Update to get the 8.0.2 or 3 upgrade...needed for Panther compatibility.

thanks sputnick. i've restarted from the Nortons disk and run disk doctor, which did find 'major problems', not to mention severe disk fragmentation. Think I'd better try restarting before defragging.... gawd, i wish i hadn't bothered!

Nah, didn't work, same problem. Zapping PRAM didn't work either. Didn't get that far in the start up process. What now....???

Ah, zapping PRAM, 2nd attempt, seems to have done the trick. Thanks again, -sputnik- Was just starting to break out in a cold sweat!

i'm sorry i forgot to tell you...you're supposed to let it zap and restart 4 times while continually holding down those keys.
brain in a vacuum today :\

Oh, I didn't know that. I let it restart two or three times before I worked out what was happening. It worked anyway.
