Grid systems again

I bought 'Making And Breaking The Grid' recently and while it does educate and inspire me, it leaves some of my basic questions unanswered. I expected to get to know not only that some layout's grid has good proportions, and its gutter is 'generous', but also where the proportions came from. Was the gutter size calculated proportionally to something, or just set with designer eye's measure?
Does Brockmann answer these kind of questions in his book? Are these basic rules explained somewhere in the interweb?
