i have a logo i did....some little text....nothing big.
i want it to be transparent so that the background will show thru.
sounds simple...take the logo in photoshop, hide the background and its transparent.
make sure to check the transparency on save for web.
now when i look at it......wow, what a pile of shit!
the letters have this pixelated white crap around them...and the pixel fonts are blurry.
wtf?

For Web: File > Save for web > select ".gif" and tweak as desired > Check "transparency" box just below > pick a matte color if you want one > save!

In case you ever find yourself in the position where you NEED to use a gif to achieve transparency and a PNG won't work, here's why it was causing a problem:
anti-aliasing. GIFs can't display translucency, if you have any pixels that aren't 100% on or 100% off, they display as white. That's what all the nasty fuzz around the logo was. The best way to get around this is to put the logo on a background color similar to the color it'll be displayed on (ie: if it's a brownish texture, put it on brown), then use your magic wand tool with the tolerence set to 0 and erase the areas that are still solid brown.

I think the quick solution to this problem--if you haven't found one already (png?)--is to make sure you select a matte color.

hmm...i assumed you already had it on the bg you intended to put it on.
why wouldn't you?

there are compatibility issues with PNG's
pain in ass, explorer on PC ?
other than that PNG's are awesome, it annoys me

stick with .gif, unless you are importing into Flash.

If you really need to:
http://webfx.eae.net/dhtml/pngbe…Opera and other real browsers now support png transparency..

I've used PNG in Explorer/PC before implementing the standard filter option so it all works good but anyone know how to USE a PNG in IE for a TD background image? I can't get the sucker to work.

I don't recall the last time I used a gif file, png's are supported more than enough to rely on them. Alpha channels can occasionally cause issues, but as long as you're saving out as a PNG-24, as previously mentioned, you should be fine. PNG-8 with alpha channels will sort of work sometimes in modern browsers, but 24's always will - just watch that file size. I remember reading something about IE mishandling PNG's that didn't have either a height and/or width of at least 70 pixels, but I've never fully confirmed this myself.
