So did she cross over to the dark side or is this a double irony? Anyone know who did the campaign?
- rasko40
yeah they were using that last year at xmas.. the irony is fucking sick, what twats.
- vespa0
how are they allowed to do that? she must have given permission...?
- rasko40
fuck knows, I very much doubt she would endorse a department store, I wonder if the selfridges people even know anything about her?
- vespa0
well some of the selfridges people clearly do!
it made me quite sad because I thought they would have to have permission for such a blatant rip and that would mean barbs has sold it on...
- rasko40
nah I'm not having it, she doesn't need a few pennies from selfridges, they probably got away with it on the grounds of parody.. *I hope*
where is her official site, I cant find it anymore, it only went up last year.. bright red site, I can only find some unofficial one.
- TransFatty0
besides if it were true that she was collaborating---
why the fuck would she want to team up
with Selfridges ? of all companies ?
who the fuck are they anyway ?
never heard of em'....
but - more importantly - because much of her work, or a percentage of it is TEXT
it goes to show there is only so much you can control via copyright.
you can't copyright an idea.
- tara|gee0
if she had collaborated teh typography would have been much better....
- Xrtions0
this is 100% not her work. it's call appropriation.
- rasko40
huh?
- Xrtions0
appropriation is when you take the ideas/designs/whatever/ of something that has been created before and you modify the idea to give it a new meaning.
- vespa0
we know what appropriation is Xrtions but this is a blatant rip of the idea, typography and even the context. The original is a comment on advertising and the rip IS advertising. The only change in context is that it is being used in selfridges.
- clownpuncher0
why not plenty of "artists" have done the same thing (taken pieces of advertisment and only changed the context)
- rasko40
are you aware of the difference between art and advertising? Is there a difference to you? Did you actually think about what you are saying or are you just being argumentative for the sake of it?
- clownpuncher0
or are you just being uppity and judgemental. if it's fair for one side to appropriate it's fair for both. if art and advertisment were still two different things i might give a shit.
- MR_T0
i think vespa's and co's issue is a bit more complex that the simple 'eye for an eye' opinion you expressed here.
- vespa0
what a sad outlook. it sounds like you are in dire need of a trip to a good gallery clownpuncher.
- clownpuncher0
i'm not saying i agree with Selfridges campaign, but i am tired of designers acting like they're above advertising. it blows my mind.
- MR_T0
no one was saying that..you're expressing your own agenda.
- rasko40
'designers acting like they're above advertising'
seriously though, what the fuck do you know about anyone here, what is your point? that you are cynical about people so you give rash antagonistic comments, sounds incredibly juvenile, as does your apathy and lack of willingness to back up your points with comments of any substance. Utter shite, have a nice day.
