I know Brockman's book is the thing, but is this one worth buying? Does it cover [more/less/same/different] stuff?
I am mostly dealing with code, but I'd like to know better at least some safe rules of basic design.

what is this all the bout "the Grid" im a student and hear bou tthis but dont no what you on about,

looks like it covers the basics, but then it shows you how to break these rules? the cover looks cool, but the rest of the stuff in there looks pretty weak.
i'd just get "Grid Systems in Graphic Design" if i were you

i havnt read it myself, but i would say its probably worth the read. problem with most designers who tend to stick to grids, is that they dont know how or when to break it.

For starters, just get the brockman book. Its a nice resource to have. Then, if you want more information, get breaking the grid. Friends have told me that its not a bad book.

Lots of Tolleson stuff in there

I have the grid systems in graphic design, well worth the price, it is a classic. But I strongly suggest you to find graphic design manual by armin hofmann if you are after classics.

yes, graphic design manual is a must have. same with "The graphic designer and his design problems" by Muller-Brockmann, and also "Graphic Design Education" rocks the place. Probably my favourite design book.

I often seem to have problems like "how do I divide this page in columns which are not the same size, but look balanced" or "how high should be this section so the whole thing doesn't look divided randomly". I need some grid layout composition rules of thumb to stick to and to be conscious of what I'm doing when I break them. I think the viewer's eye sees and likes proportions even if he's not aware of that, so I'd better learn how it's done.
