Source Files

I recently handed over a bunch of my illustrator source files to another design firm on behalf of a client, who is going to repurpose them for use in promotional materials. Technically, I know that the source files belong to my client (per our contract). But I feel like there is proprietary information in my illustrator files because it will show other designers "how" I acheived certain looks. Furthermore, I'm paranoid that elements from my illustrator files could be re-used for other projects. I now wish I had just taken the time and given them high res tifs or something. Does anybody out there feel me?

Yeah, I don't do that.

Ok, so I'm not crazy for being totally wierded out by this...
- MrDinky0
yeap pretty much
if you dont like that than you should told them that you are not handing out source files
just sent them the PDFs

well, as i said before Dinky, it was in the contract so had I made a stink, it probably would have gotten me no where. Thanks though, I just wanted to know how other designers felt. PDF's is a good idea. An even better idea would have been to export a high res layered tif file out of illustrator - except the psd export out of illustrator hardly ever reads the layers correctly. Anyways, I'm hoping for the best, but the other design firm is bugging me about fonts and shit, and they're peeping my patented illustrator steez...

You're not going to give them the fonts, are you?
- cyberthug0
you're kidding right, mayo?
- mayo0
you said they were bugging you about fonts, i'm making sure you're not thinking of giving them the fonts. just clarifying.

jus tell 'em...
'cuz bebe i'm just a thu-ug'
- cyberthug0
Oh, I'm sorry I thought you were joking Mayo - No I also gave them the fonts I used. I didn't use anything out of the ordinary and was really surprised they didn't have some of the faces they requested.
- cyberthug0
i think its:
'bebe, cuz i'm a thu-ug'
Trick Daddy, right? Christina Aguilera turned me on to Trick Daddy in the back of a limo in NY. No shit.

you do bill cosby proud

I wouldn't have given them the fonts. That's their responsibility to purchase.

word up, mayo i hear you. a move like that could kill my 'team player' rep, though. Like what if I expensed the fonts I purchased to my client, then don't THEY own them? So many gray areas in this business... This forum is a good litmus test.

If they purchase them, then, yes, the fonts are theirs. But if they didn't and passing the fonts to someone else who is doing a job i could be getting paid for wants them, i'd have to find a better way around that. some sort of compromise so as not to ruin the team player rep, but also not to screw me out of work.
