Remember to spare a minute of thought.
It makes me sad to think of how when I have children...there will be so few living survivors left.

there was a great interview w/ a veteran last night on NPR, did you catch it?
- jevad0
no. shit.

there were real heroes back then. and heroic companies.
my grandpa was bribed out of captivation with a huge amount Philips transistor radio's!
i sort of thank my life to Philips... weird eh?
anyway,
respect.
(and good thing that the German PM will be there for the first time, we should be able to get over hating Germans after 60 years.. i hope the few veterans that still live won't be offended though..)

Europe.
So much to answer for.

Another tragedy is that only 11 photographs from 130 ground shots survived from the D-Day. These were taken by the great Robert Capa, responsible for the only infantry registry of the whole endeavour.

Time Magazine has a magazine/book out now about the history of D-Day. Pick it up, it's very good.
I've been into WWII history for a long time. I hope keeping the stories and memories and everything continue on for generations, even after all the survivors are gone.

I think I heard on the news last week or on NPR that 1,500 WWII veterans die every day.
- waynepixel0
I have just seen on the news that there was a search for film footage of D-Day.
They found a lot of fooage that was film on that day and it is going to be shown on UK, TV, in the next few days. And it will be all in full-colour not back and white.

TRUE BADASSES!

Such a sacrifice those men made. From what my grandfather says a lot of those men walked out of the LCVP's right into machine guns. What a nightmare.

"1,500 WWII veterans die every day. "
: (
It's pretty disgusting how long it took to get the memorial up in washington....
- JazX0
damn I have a ton of images from when my great Uncle and Grandfather were pushed back into Germany. Funny thing is that they were both born there and then had to fight their own people so-to-speak. I have to scan those in and post 'em. Nazi strongholds that were taken in one piece, hotels and pictures of old branding for companies like Bosch, etc.

I agree jevad, that's total BS they waited that long for something for those guys. My grandad is dead and gone and never saw it.
- unfittoprint0
yeah, JazX check those and post them.
thanks.

"1,500 WWII veterans die every day. "
i think it says a lot about the vast amount of veterans there are/were, and their age.
about that footage they found, i seriously hope they will broadcast it here as well.
can you imagine the state of mind a soldier must have had when they ran into the sea and right into the barrels of the Germans ashore?
these guys had serious guts!
- Mimio0
It's strange considering there's 2 Vietnam memorials and a Korean War memorial.
- JazX0
yeah I have them in a photobook in my attic. Now I'm motivated to get them down.
- DutchBoy0
would be very interested in seeing them, Jaz!
