G4 laptop/dvd burner problem

  OK before you all slag me off and tell me to buy DVD pro - I do not do video stuff for real I am just toying with it...

  Basically, my laptop isnt a super drive in which case I recently bought a DVD lacie burner. Will I be able to burn IDVD stuff to an external writer if I get the new version of I DVD (version 4) that comes with I LIFE??
