It's about "us" versus "them". Something far more insidious than that people being fat and lazy driving their SUVs blissfully unaware of the consequences of their excess.

No such thing as a "culture war."
Commerce is part of our culture, not some mysterious opposing force. Culture is not a process, but ideas -- specifically those that are imitated. (just google "memetics" and "meme theory" for a while) Culture includes commerce, at least for us. Culture is not bought and sold; it spreads more like virus after virus. Commerce is just part of the cultural transaction, if you will.
That Reason link is just rhetorical BS from pseudo-intellectuals... most likely trying to blame the failure of their artistic endeavors on the "system" of "commerce" that's somehow holding them down.
