to a certain extent yes, but what's good about these awards is the exposure they are giving to different designers from different fields (outside of architecture and fashion) For example last year Rockstar games was up against Apple's John Ives, Solange Azagury-Partridge a jewellery designer and a product designer( i think?) Tord Boontje. The awards seem to give pretty broad range of candidates which has to be a good thing?

Don't think the entrant has to be from the UK. After all johnston is an aussie and tord bjontee isnt the most english name I have ever heard. ;D
.
Side note: is it becoming more acceptable for us to ride that art-design line than it would have been say 20 years ago. I reckon it is, people like tomato embraced that and paved the way for the acceptance of it in my opinion.

Yeah best NT thread I have been on in while.

isn't this shifting into the realms of 'Graphic Author' or whatever the buzz phrase is?
Designers that are led equally by creative expression as well as client set briefs? Tomato fall into that category nicely, I would say Carson does too (despite what peoples opinion is of him now...he paved the way for a lot of shifting boundaries) The new Designer of the year deffo fits in with that.
My side note: Gradiate, I saw that you sold another Tomato poster on ebay, damn I should of held out to the second one rather than the first!!! A bit of a price difference!!!!!
