Last try:
Can you force extensions to reset in OS9 while restarting?
- Mimio0
You mean ..."change extension sets"?
- Soler0
don't know- the problem is the screen goes blank when starting Os becuas ethe resolution is set too high for the monitor. so i want to reset the monitor extension so i can see the creen
- Mimio0
Can't you just stick you diagnostic cd in and restart from the CD drive? That will reset your resolution, Then you can make whatever changes to the inactive System folder you want.

hold down apple-option-p-r after turning on, wait for 3 chimes. should be all gravy after that.
- Mimio0
You think it's a PRAM problem?
- Soler0
hmmmmmm. its a 1st gen G4 at my work. we dont have those discsc here. wouldn't know how to find it.
Thanks though> so no other way huh?
- Soler0
when in Control panels > monitors> the res was set to the highest. screen turned black. now it only starts w/ extensions off. otherwise it chokes
whats PRAM [excuse my ignorance]
- Mimio0
It's a memory manager parameter. Sorry, I don't have any other ideas fo ryou.
- Soler0
you think I should try the pram thing or it will it possibly screw something up?
- Mimio0
It won't hurt to try it.
- Soler0
thanx Mimio
- puter0
resetting the PRAM will not screw anything up except maybe your date and time... it might default back to a working RES if you are lucky- if it is booting with extensions off that is a good thing- now you can tweak the monitor extension and it should be saved when you reboot with extensions ON
- Soler0
Pram reset didn't work.
thanx though
- Soler0
puter
it says I cant access monitor w/ extensions off
- ribit0
how about connecting a second monitor and switching the menu bar between both screens, and turning mirroring on and off and other totally random things?
- Soler0
no 2nd monitor port.... anything else?
- puter0
try to restart holding down the spacebar- this will load ONLY the default extensions- see if you can see your screen then... or do you have another mac there? copy the monitor extension and replace it with the fucked up one...
- puter0
somebody here should be able to email you the monitor extension... better yet try deleting the monitor preference in your system folder.
- ribit0
I was going to suggest throwing away the Displays or Monitor preferences file... but what is it called? (The Classic System Folder doesnt seem to have one..probably not used in Classic mode?)
- Soler0
spacebar didn't work
i can't copy anything because it won't even start up unless extensions are off. Hmmm. or should I replace it with it off?
