Clients vs. Creative Directors

Here's a little theoretical scenario for discussion:

A big name agency with a big staff is hired by a reasonably big client (with equally big staff) for a last minute print and web design project.

The client meets with the creative team several times and a plan/scope/etc.. is formulated and acted upon by many different parties and managers.

As the deadline looms, the client begins calling the designer and working with them on changes directly, bypassing everyone else involved in the project. Soon enough, the creative director and agency input has almost vanished due to the clients constant changes and alterations. The project is done on time and slightly over budget due to one representative from the client acting alone.

(note: client is VERY important to the agency and any complaints to upper management are brushed aside due to repeat business)

Anybody encounter a scenario like this? If so - what role were you and how did you deal?
