does anyone know if there is a way to export a file from autocad and maintain the layers for use in illustrator?
thanks.

i think if you export to dwg, you can choose whether you import it with or without the layers.

it's already a *.dwg, no need to export it as one.
i know you can open *.dwg's in illustrator, dont know if the layers stay there. would it matter?
- laurus1
or you could try dxf

CorelDraw maintains AutoCAD layers.
if direct import doesn't work, export it from Corel.

Bump for help.
I have a complex architectural .dwg file for a really large project I'm starting work on. I have an AutoCAD account, but no software installed at the moment.
Can someone help me convert the floorplans to PDFs in the meantime?
- Illustrator won't open it.monospaced
- If no one can help, download a trial copy of Rhino and convert using that (load in DWG, export as AI). probably a terrible 'solution' though, sorry! :)detritus
- actually, discount the above - if a dwg is tricky in illy, it's invaribaly tricky in Rhino too.detritus
- ok... I'm trying to hunt down the Fusion 360 licenses we purchased a couple years ago so I can try it outmonospaced
- Trueview should open it and then you can print to PDF.
http://www.autodesk.…face_melter - Thanks! I'm downloading Trueview now. I had been viewing in A360, but can't convert or output from there.monospaced
- Shit, Trueview is Windows only. Can anyone perhaps handle a conversion for me if I sent a file?monospaced
- (no PC here, sorry)Gnash
- Sorry man, don't have CAD on this machine.face_melter

Export to PDF, keep all the colors. Select the colors and isolate to layers.
That's the best way I've found to work with them. Exporting to PDF usually maintains the curves, too, whereas opening the dwg in Illustrator sometimes shows the curves as reduced lines, etc.
DWG Viewers, free Autodesk tool, exports to PDF if you need a tool to do that for you.
- I can't seem to find that software for the Mac. More than happy to get dirty with a pdf but I need to get to the export stage first.monospaced
- than why don't you answer my question?sted
