How hard is it to set up a damn apache server on my pc,that serves as some sort of test server?
I want to learn a bit of PHP, but my ISP doesn't allow me to run a server so it has to have restricted access.
I hate comuters
Please help

I'm not too bright and it took me 20 minutes a few weeks ago. It's mainly downloading the files, installed then configuring about three text files, which aren't nearly as complex as they seem. Like telling which dir is your php dir, couple folder permissions, stuff like that.

I'll report back in 20 minutes

Get yourself a pack that has everything bundled already. Couldn't get any easier - just run the installation app and it does everything automatically.

it worked.... but I guess everybody can access the damn thing now.. :/

right... but we'd need your IP for that.... btw, mines set up as a test server, at times, and I use http://www.no-ip.com/ to assign a virtual domain to it so I can conveniently access it when I'm at the office.

So how do you protect others from accessing it then, atomica? I've been thinking about setting up a similar thing, but as far as security goes I might as well post my credit card number on NT.

well I control when its up and down, it's not on any search engines, its not posted anywhere, the ips dynamic, i'm firewalled with just that port 80 open for apache... it tends to be secure, I haven't noticed any attacks in blackice....

I don't know much about all this stuff, but no-ip.com won't do me any good since I already have a fixed ip adress.
It's just that my provider is doing port scans (or something like that) to make sure noone is running a server.
Since I am not going to figure out how to make the server only accessible from my machine.... I am just going to use a strange port.

I see. Hmm, might do that too then! thanks for the tips!
