Tell me something MAJOR & GUTSY that you've done in your lifetime (a decision, a move, a change), and tell me what happened as a result, & whether or not you have regrets.
Thank you very much.

dang - you know my story...did you get that email with the pics I sent?

I moved over to Michigan from California to finish school. I didn't know anyone and went in blind. While I was there I decided to take a little time off and move to Germany for 6 months. Again, not knowing anyone, or German. Both experiences were life changing for me. I have never felt so lonely as I did in Germany the first few months, but in short time I was loving my experiences. School was the same way, I met life long friends who have travelled out to Cali to visit me since.
Go for it!

This week I'm going to northern Idaho to look for houses for my wife 2 month old daughter and I.
If we sell our house here in San Diego, we can afford a crazy house up there.
My wife will be able to stay at home to be a Mom.
I left a job that I've had for 4 years to work from home to have more Dad time.
All this within the last month! Wish us luck in Idaho!
( we used to live in the mountains so the culture shock won't be that great)

Left pretty much everything on a moments notice (a steady relationship, well paying job, friends, family, etc...) in NYC for a crazy web position in London. Figured I'd be there for 9 months max and then ended up there for 5 years, never once returning to the US in all that time. Now am looking to do the same in New Zealand.
Two quick thoughts:
1: Unless I see evidence to the contrary, you only live once, so make the most of it while you're here.
2: The really BIG things in life never happen when you want them to or when you're looking for them. They always sneak up on you and smack you in the arse when you least expect it.
3: No matter how daunting, big changes are almost ALWAYS worth the risk.
:-)

I dropped out of the engineering program at an Ivy after almost three years... and went to art school.
What I gave up: A potential blue-chip position as an engineering consultant, 60k salary out of college, and pride.
Where I am instead: Looking for full-time employment, penniless, and very happy.
Lesson: Do what you were created to do.

what if by doing what you really want to do you will hurt someone else?

Not doing it will be more painful in the end, toastinator

i must also add in the past i have made some bad decisions but i learned quite a big deal out of them that help me in my decision making process.
trial&error, don't be afraid, it's worth it.

Oh, I'm doing it alright. I just like to hear about other people's experiences. Know what I mean, Vern? Gives me a bit of a push.
I already have my life planned out for the next two years, and I'm ultra excited!

You're very welcome, Brooke. I know exactly what it's like to stare at the edge of the cliff and then take that running leap.
It sounds cliche, but do what your heart tells you. You'll know if it's the right time - things will just have a weird way of happening that will push you in a certain direction. after that, the choice is yours.
Toastie is right about hurting others for selfish interests, but more often than not, i found these to be short term pain for long term gain kinda things.
Ultimately, it's gotta be about YOU for better or worse.
Holy shit - I'm starting to sound like a goddamn advice columnist. Shutting up now...

Decided within three weeks to pack up my life and move from Dallas TX to Chicago with a good friend of mine who was coming here by himself.
No job, no prospects, just finished college a few months before, May 2001.
We actually packed on September 11th, so it was a very surreal time to move to a city the size of Chicago.I had no answers, and had as many family members pulling for me to succeed as I did people who were just waiting for the bottom to fall out and see me tuck my tail and run back home.
Times were tough at first, but I knew there was light at the end of the tunnel, and I have no regrets about moving here. It was the best thing I've ever done in my life I think.
I met a wonderful girlfriend here who I've been with for 1 1/2 years, I've been playing music solo, I've got a band now and we're getting close to "go time" with getting shows in town, I've made great friends here, I have a good job, and I'm glad to call Chicago home now.

You should be excited Brooke, you got some cajones!
Can I have your apt?
