Anybody here in the New York City area? Anybody interesting in designing games? Perhaps I can help...

This summer I will begin teaching a class on game design at the School of Visual Arts. Entitled The History and Exploration of Video Game Design I hope to dig further into an area I feel some schools only graze the surface of, and that's to approach the art of video games with a more analytical viewpoint, instead of a purely technical one.

Perhaps I should be admitting this, but I'm still not 100% sure on how to approach the class, so I'm viewing its a work in progress. Actually, I invite anyone to ask questions, and even make suggestion in what they would like in a game design class.

What I did have planned is to go over the history of gaming, it's technological milestones, as well is the cultural ones, and try to find out what makes a good game "good". As I mentioned before, I'm not going to dwell on the technical aspects (there are other classes for that) but instead show how to create a logical and workable basic plan to which to build a game from. It's something which I've always felt quite strongly about and this class is a fruition of sorts, so I'm extremely proud and excited that it's at last happening.

If anyone is interested, or has any comments, and yes, even suggestions, please let me know.

And for those ready to register, you can do so by calling 212-592-2200 or going [url=http://www.schoolofvisualar...

Here are some common questions before starting:

What point do I want to make?

    What am I selling/branding?

How can I make this viral, therefore successful?

How can I get people to come back?

What can I persuade people to do with my game?

How long can I keep people playing?

How hard do I want to make the game to play?

Did I include a Sound Off button?

I hope that helps get things rolling here. Great topic. Good luck.

Note my wording, as a console game is commonly an online game what with network adapters etc for PS2

Rather than focusing on the marketing and branding of the game, why not focus the class on storytelling and how it could successfully be achieved through gameplay.

What tools are you going to be using?
