Talking to Myself Designing vs. Design

Having read the interview (thanks for the post Paul), I've found myself in numerous situations where I present a "wholistic" approach to a client's needs. Sometimes talking about culture, meaning and purpose is appreciated. Most of the time, I get the "confused dog" look, and the question, "Can you just make the logo bigger?"
I know this is just one of the things you have to deal with in design. My problem is knowing when to bother with a thoughtful presentation and when to whore out some slick logos?

You've got to speak to people on their own level. Sometimes that can mean making small animal noises.

Try telling the average person that their videocard isn't working becaused the drivers are broken.
People are begining to think that their computers really do talk to other computers.
