milk the bastards for everything they have got otherwise they'll just take the piss

but seriously. It really depends on Who the client is, are they a friend? the money they potentiallly have, the amount of work involved, the level of work, ie/ is it gonna make them a shed load of cash from you stuff? and finally your level of experience/ability. For instance i am going to be freelancing in london in a few weeks at about £200 a day. But for other people i have charged as little as £10 per hour when starting out. Don't be shy to charge them what you think your worth

it wouldn't be for friends, but it is based in the north east so I guess rates would be far cheaper up here than in london - I've never done freelance before so I have no clue at all as to what people charge or what you can get away with...

your looking at about £25 hour in ghey london, dont know about up north, probably about 4 pints of gravy would be an equivelant, you could barter for mushy peas as an incentive bonus scheme.

hmm... southerner humour - great.
I thought AT LEAST several barrels of "jellied eels" and some fun filled days talking in rhyming slang, amongst other stereotype cockney 'geezer' activities would suffice down there.

Fair play...what about a barrel ful of whining about the weather...is that a universal currency in the UK?
;-)

Is the joba typical freelance, onsite position? Or is it more a project based quote you need to do?

oh definately, I'm after a heavily sequined pearly king suit myself cor blimey, a coupla britneys down the rub a a dub dub then up the apples and pears for a bit of how's yer father with a bit of old brass, know what I mean?
cept I'm neither cockaknee nor southern.

it's neither - I have no job, no money, and at the moment pretty much no life - however, in the midst of all this applying for jobs and try to get it so that I don't have to end up working in the 21st century equivilent of a mine - the 'call centre' or something just to get by, I thought I'd go for some freelance stuff - I've had a bit of interest but it's all 'get back to us with your rates' and I have no rates - some is for knocking up very very basic web pages, others would be for t-shirt designs for reluctanthero.co.uk, others would be flyer designs and record sleeves etc... but I'm trying to get a generic hourly rate

For some reason £200/day seems like a pretty generic day rate. But a with all things, how good the client thinks you are, how much money they have, how much they expect to pay...all plays a part.
I have tried at certain times to ascertain a clients budget and quote accordingly depending on how much I like them or the job. They are usually pretty straighforward if you just ask them.
In your circumstance, ut's sort of like trying to find water with a divinig rod.
