No problem launching a server on the desktop, but although I use the same username/password I use in my FTP apps, I cant upload files, it tell me 'it can not be modified'.
Is there something I'm doing wrong, or is it just the way it is?

ok, found it:
The Finder lets you connect to FTP servers with read-only access so you can copy files from the server. However, to copy files to an FTP server, you will need another program. Visit the Apple website for programs available for Mac OS X.
