Just find a nice little coffee shop, get horrendously and unbelievably stoned, whilst moaning you never get this good a grade of stuff at home, then just wander round the streets eating and buying crap :)..
Its got such a unique atmosphere, interesting times will seek you out, its a very engaging place - you dont really need any plans..just hash and serendipity.
If you must plan something then go on a stoned canal trip and the Van Gogh museum, Id recommend :).
Have fun its a really special place :).

No trip is complete without wasting away some time at the Grasshopper and the Bulldog. Touristy? Maybe. But still cool as shit.
Heineken Brewery tour is fun and the beer is really good when it's that fresh! Especially if you catch the last tour, which lets out around 4?
Bars close very early, so get your fun in early...the night goes quiet after 1am.

I just read that amsterdam its on the top 10 cities to live in,
How ironic is that..
A place where marijuana is legal, and has the lowest number of drug addicts in the world..They dont tell you that on the "truth" commercials..

i was just there last summer. There are lots of great places there to check out. The Anne Frank House was first on our agenda, then the Heineken Brewery, and a diamond museum (the name which i cannot remember), the Hash and Marijuana Museum, the Sex Museum, and about 200 "coffee shops". There are a lot of canals running through the city too, so bring your camera. Go to the library and get a small tourist's guide to Amsterdam and check out all the hotspots listed at the back on one of those minimaps. You gotta plan out your days carefully because once you step foot in one of those coffee shops, it takes a good three hours off your day's schedule.

oh yeah and don't forget to check out the Red Light District, not just for the hookers, but for the bright lights and great ambience. the Sex Museum is pretty fun. my girlfriend grabbed my arm and took me into one of these little Video Viewing booths and locked the door ;)
good times for sure. Also check out the Grasshopper, or Cheech & Chongs. When we were there we thought we had to stay inside the cafés to smoke but we ended up just wandering the streets with a big-ass three-pape-cone.

you don't need to smoke anything for your perception to seem off when you're in Amsterdam.
all the builings lean out over the sidewalks. There's a logical explanation - but it still looks so-oo strange.
(oh, and smoking outside the cafe's is frowned upon in general)
- kbags0
Yes, but cops will just ask you to put it out. I didn't notice the buildings were actually tilting...thought that was the magic of Amsterdam.
Totally agree...surreal place for sure!
- fifty500
frowned upon? really? i didn't know. next time i go i'll remember that >_<

I was there last Sept. and the highpoints were the night time red light district walking tour (check the VVV near the Centraal Station to sign up), the night time canal tour with an actual person explaining everything (as opposed to a tape-recorded tour), walking around without spending any euros, and taking a train to nearby Utrecht.
- ikbenvanrijn0
go to the rijksmuseum & the stedlijk. both about 20/30 mins walk from centraal station. just walk up damrak with some frites met mayo
so many places to go there. if you go to utrecht, dont take the stoptrein. take the express. saves you 30 mins.
might as well buy a gram & get a blowjob there too :o)

last time I stepped out of the train in amsterdam...... I was in gay land.

jimmy woo, nice place little bit overhyped, but it's new.
Club iniz nice restaurant, near "de munt" first floor.
For drinks "de pijp" as a whole can be nice. The wannabe Soho of amsterdam.
Finch, Borderwijck near de noordermarkt Borderwijck very good food.
