Didn't you ever had the problem that you designed a piece and thought it was unique and after a while you find a site or you read a designbook and you see where you're inspiration comes from, not that it's identically but if you compare them you can see a connection between them and than you feel totaly frustrated about your own style. I'll hope i'm not the only one who has that problem. Did you had that ones before?

its obvious, from simply flipping through design annuals and looking around the web, that even the most critically acclaimed designers' answer to your question would be...
yes.

design is about progression so it's only natural to look at what's been done in order to advance.
the real question you have to ask yourself is how you react to what you see before you...do you stick with the status quo and only add (for example, inspired by David Carson you experiment with type) or do you react against it (see what David Carson has done and simply use helvetica and a rigid grid structure).
bear in mind though, design is about finding a solution to a particular need and shouldn't be based on just 'style'.

i find my self doing this all the time,
Hillman Curtis even mentions this in his book MTIV, in the inspiration section about Pablo Picaso
"in 1906 he came across a collection of African masks in the studio of Andre Derain." -- MTIV, Hillman Curtis.
inspiration is everywhere, and if someone else's work inspires you the go for it, dont let it think that your unoriginal. Just dont COPY something verbatim
