I'm sick and tired of people ripping on Mel and his movie. It's a movie. It's based on a true story. Whether you are a Christian or not, the movie is still an epic that is worth seeing. I'm sure my life will be changed somewhat after seeing it too - like after watching Schindler's List, my life was changed (still on my top 3 of all time list).
My other contention is that people are discounting it as historical without researching it at all! The only question of historicity comes in the account of the resurrection. Other than that, Jews, Christians, and better still, Historians that focus on that time period are in little doubt as to the events of crucifixion. You'd be hard pressed to find a reputable historian (read: non-tabloid) that will disagree with the events as laid out in the New Testament.
Whether you agree with the account of the resurrection or not is one thing... but don't reject historical evidence. It makes me ill to know that so many people would rather believe agenda driven journalists / reporters / and a whole list of non-historians rather than look into the matter itself.

chill out man, only a small number of Jews are riping on him and since they control the media... well you know, then it's all over the news.

MOst of the controversy is just PR for the movie. Frankly I'm sick of seeing that movie on the news every fucking day. I can't wait until it's out of the theatre. Stop pushing religion down our throats.

certain films can have this effect, but mostly on the younger mind. one film i remember seeing, not long after it had come out on VHS was Blue Velvet...this changed my life. mel gibsons propaganda piece is not going to makle people more interested in film...so, why not put a reporter at the exit of every film so that viewers have a chance to respond with "I cried" or "it changed my life"....
i think people who are already altered by this fiction will only feel more justified after experiencing the intended effect.

i wish mel would stop shoving his ego project down my throat
"It's based on a true story"
I think 3/4 or so of the planet may argue a bit with you there but whatever.

The choice to ignore is still a viable option.
No one is forcing/shoving anything down your throat.
Jus sayin'

a true story?
maybe to you,and to a lot of other people, but to me the bible is a good work of fiction, or a version of particular occurences.
thanks anyway.

jevad... history is not a subjective decision based on political agendas and personal bias. it is (ideally) a collection of evidence and making a case for the most likely scenario. That is why I believe the Holocaust really happened. there are eye witnesses of it, and there is historical/archeological evidence of it. some crazy people deny those and say it didn't happen... the rest of us think they're nuts (because they base their belief on personal bias or political agenda, and ignore evidence). I'm not saying Christianity is right or wrong in its whole, but i am saying that Jesus is a historical figure - that even non-christian scholars agree with. there are a handful of tabloid historians who make a living by promoting a minority agenda (Jesus Seminar, JD Crossan, Wells, etc.), but they are not respected by the larger history/archeology community.

apart from the fact that historians say that the language spoken at the time in Jerusalem would have been Greek, Aramaic and Hebrew not a Latin and Aramaic mix used in the film, the concept of a long haired jesus is just a stereotype and many historians say he would have had short hair. which would lead me to believe that much of the rest of what is going on in this movie is conjecture to supplant and ego-driven religious ideology.
TF : they're totally working on it
