Rescued from my inbox...
Hello all, thought Id give my update on Brazil before I enter into Argentina.
Well Ive been away for three weeks now, and its passed incredibly quickly, and already Ive covered the equivialant distance of London to Madrid by land.
Started off in Rio, which according to Conde Naste is the most beautiful city in the world, and it is hard to disagree. We stayed in Ipanema, with a view over the beach. The senery and liveliness of Rio Blows the mind...Favelas, mountains, beaches, views, bikinis, football, music, food and just sheer amount of people, is hard to take in.
We did all the obvious stuff like Sugar loaf and the Christ Statue (Corcovado) and the rainforest in the middle of the city, all of which gives you an amazing overview of Rio. The view from Sugar loaf is just amazing. But the best place to get a flavour of rio was the beach, everything revolves around the beach. You´ll be glad to hear I held up english pride by failing miserably in a game of football volleyball. Anyway it didn't get much better than Ipanema at sunset with a joint of brazilians finest.
On the last day in Rio, I went to the Maracana to see Botofogo vrs Vasco (the equivalent of Tottenham against Arsenal). Suitably crazy. Flags the size of a football pitch covering the stands, fireworks, flares, beer... The atmosphere was unlike any football match ive ever been to, and that includes any big preston games...!
Anyway the nightlife was great as well, although nothing starts until 2 which kind of wipes you out for a day afterwards. The food was as good as I have ever tasted too . Rio was a good place to start.
After that we went to Paraty (4hrs south of Rio), an old colonial coffee port, and a unesco heritage site. Quaint place, 300 beaches on 150 little islands, barbecues on the port, fantastic fresh fish. Stayed in a lovely little hotel run by the equivalent of Cilla Black. From what I could deduce she was a famous brazilian singer from way back, and continued to remind everyone with portraits and photographs of herself all over the hotel.
Paraty is set in a setting second to none. surrounded by mountains covered in virgin rainforest and in a bay dotted with islands, it was a perfect antidote to the hussle and bussle of Rio.
From Paraty, we traveled through Sao paulo, staying one night, but it pissed down so much I didn't get chance to see much, and the following day we found out from the news that it continued to rain and by the time (6hrs later) we arrived in Curitiba, Sao paulo was under 6 ft of water and people were being evacuated, a lucky escape.
Curitiba was a nice little stop, a university town with a thirst to match. It reminded me of manchester a bit, people wandering around shitfaced all times of the day. They have a road there called the 24hr road, full of bars and restaurants and needless to say it was messy...good fun though.
6 more hours down the road and we arrived to a place called Illa St Caterina. Like everything so far in Brazil, it was beautiful, breathtaking etc. It is an island about the size of Jersey in the south of Brazil. The main thing this island has got going for it is the beaches. the main ones are all surfing beaches, one in particular is where one of the world surfing championships are held.
Spent the day there body watching...Ive come to the opinion that nothing wobbles in Brazil, six packs and speedos and the women as you´d expect are nubile and wearing the smallest bikini´s in the world. Needless to say I stripped off and waddled my way to the waves (sucking in the whitest stomach in Brazil) and promptly nearly drowned. I´ll be leaving the t-shirt on staying the bar from now on. We stayed on the beach at night drinking etc with all the bars booming out the ever present bob marley tracks, very nice indeed.
Anyway thats as brief as I could be...going to Foz de Iguazu tomorrow (on the Argentinean border) and from there we fly to Ushuaia, the most southerly town in the world on the Tierra del Fuego peninsula. From 35 degrees to -10 should be interesting, then we travel up the Argentinean coast through Patagonia, stopping to say hello to the Welsh before spending a bit of time in Buenos Aires, from where I hope to send the next update.
Hope you are all well...
Ian

Why are you going south if Carnaval starts soon?
I was in Rio last New Years eve. And 3 years ago for Carnaval in Salvador. Recently received a t-shirt from a girl in brazil who I want to come visit again.
I just myself returned from 2 months of adveture in Thaialand and Burma. another country worth a visit.
