Hello, I'm looking for some methods to go about rotoscoping for animation from a digitized video. Currently, I've been capturing individual screen selections then tracing in Illustrator. Just seeing what other peoplpe might be doing. Thanks.

i've always wondered how last year's Toyota Matrix commercial was done...that thing was fresh, you could do it in streamline, couldn't you? that'd be faster, less clean.
i don't know if you've seen the supreme beings of leisure video a while ago, they did that in streamline & flash.

first of all, this is not rotoscoping. why is that such a popular misconception?
you're trying to achieve a technique called a rotoscoping texture or a sequence map animation.
anyway, if you're output is flash i've accomplished this with fair results by adjusting threshold in photoshop then exporting paths -> illustrator -> flash using a batch process is photoshop.

tilehead, yes it is.
For either broadcast video or Internet streaming video, rotoscoping is the rotated projection of a sequence of usually photographed action image frames so that the artist can trace from the frame or create an image to superimpose on it. It can be thought of as "painting on movies" efficiently.

"A rotoscoping texture (sometimes called a sequence map) is the use of video within an animation, something like an animation within an animation."
0 for 2 man.

Rotoscoping is a tracing technique used to create a traveling matte around moving imagery.
The definition is quite vague as the desired result isn't always a matte, but rather just the traced vector splines. In 3D, sometimes the term is used to match the camera of CG and live plates.
In other words, I don't know the true definition and I am pretty useless.

after effects, commotion, combustion ... animated masks for rotoscoping. if your ouput is flash, the masks can be copied and pasted into illustrator as well. keframe animation is much easier than frame by frame.
