Anybody have a synthesizer recommendation for a beginner electronic musician who took some piano lessons as a teen and likes to bang drums?
I'm looking for something to create everything from percussion to ecclectic sound efx. Maybe cut up some foghat?

First, what sequencer are you using? Certain ones (like reason) wont support vst plugs (softsynths). Cubase, Nuendo, Logic, etc can. but sequencing is only half the battle.
The synth that plugs into it is the more important part. For a beginner, you should look at absynth, FM7, Battery, junglist, or smaller ones like deltaIII or chronos. some more advanced synths (as far as usability goes) are z3ta+, kontakt, and reaktor.
if your looking to just cut up samples, stick to sound forge, and get some plugs for that bad boy, like the Waves bundle (mastering tools), blue bundle (effects) or anything from rgc audio, steinberg, or native insturments.
sorry for writting the book! haha, email me if you have any questions.

Are we talking Soft-Synths here or what?
If so, a good one is Cube (by Virsyn)

Thanks, all! I did some more homework today and found Propellerhead Reason.
Looks like a solid option to get into the game...software and a cheap controller. Anybody have experience with this? Good or bad?
Thanks again!

midi controller and a softsynth is the cheapest way to go- you might need an external midi box tho.
pay the extra and get the beautiful hum of an analogue synth. 10 times more fun and productive.
