Image Copyright, ripoff?

I have a project that I'm doing that involves a huge amount of images. I'm going to greatly manipulate the images for the project.
If I were to collect the images from the web, would I be liable for copyright infringement?
Somewhere along the line of employments I had, an experienced designer said that if I manipulated an image more than 50% it was mine. How true is this?
I'm ready to buck up and take all the pics myself but this would be a major undertaking.
I know in music you can sample 5 seconds.
Anyone know the specifics on this litigaiton? I'm in the US.

seriously, using images off the net is a whole tombuggery of problems that may or maynot appear in time...better to shoot them yourself....
there is a few free stock sites though...

Thnks Brundlefly. You must be the only experienced one up at this hour.

no, we are all lurking about....
I think you might find more freeish sites with free stock at one of these resources.....no promises...

I would be careful, in the example you have cited I think you will be okay.....
I bought a $2000 image from Masterfile once, and the local newspaper did an article on me while that image was on my computer's monitor ( I was creating the ad at the time of the interview ) and a month later Masterfile was knocking claiming I had gone outside the realm of usage and wanted another $700 which I promptly paid....
but I sure didn't want too, so it's up to you, I have heard the 50% concept, but I have never really seen it in place... luckily I have been mostly blessed with projects that have budgets for shots.

Yeah I think you'll be okay with the example you used.
Brundle, you are one lucky bastard. All my first gigs were nobody club promoters, so basically they had no budget for photos. I didn't really think much of it when I was using the photos, but now its pretty embarassing. Purging a year and a half of portfolio work because I used stolen shots isn't too fun. Bah if I could only turn back time and do it right!
Actually had a client tell me they wanted to use this shot straight off of rolling stone magazine, even after I told her 'no' on some other ideas. Needless to say I fired that client.

Brundle and iDp, you two are just cats-ass designers and I'm honored with your input. Usually I get little or no photography. My latest got some great photography:

But this project, has no budget for photography. With your advice I think I'm going to chance it. I would never normally do something like this. Copyright is such a hot issue right now. I think stock companies get disgruntled after 40,000 copies. I'm hoping my stolen and 'appropriated' images are ignored. So I'll rethink the budget when that time comes. Thanks!
