hey all.
quick question about search engines and frames. i really have no idea how search engines work so, i apologize for my ignorance.
we coded a site using frames for an internet consultant and someone told him that the only way for the search engine spiders to pick up the sections would be to break the site out of frames (re code it)
is there any merit to what this guy says? right now the only way for the site to get picked up is by the meta tags we coded into the page. i figured that would be ok since we coded them on the index.html page and the php files that call the sections and load them into the content frame.
but im not really sure...any ideas?

search engines hate frames.

Agreed - lose the frames!
Also, meta tags aren't of much help these days either. Most search engines ignore them and go straight for the actual content on the page.

My 9-to-5 is in the process of undergoing a SEO (Search engine optimization) overhall too. Definately lose the frames. Another thing you can do is set all your CSS and Javascript files to link out to separate files instead of placing the code directly in the page. The sooner there is actual content. the better the ranking in some cases.

web standards plays an important role in seo, as well. the document structure can help search engines index more thoroughly (ie. using h1, h2...h6, p, lists, etc; basically using proper, compliant xhtml/css for sites).
another reason to stop designing like it is the 90's.

does the same go for iframes?
