There's actually no accurate translation of Chinese into english characters --- it's dependent on dialect and convention, rather than anything more formal --- like there are 100 different spellings of Kaddafi. Here is a Chinatown page in Honolulu, which I would suspect knows how to spell their own celebration.

yesterday i heard these giant explosions around the corner.. i saw a lot of smoke, it appeared to be in front of the Chinese restaurant..
them Chineze sure know how to make some frigging firecracker fest!

- jevad0
yeah sure dolan - you're right - but that's how my chinese teacher in school and all my chinese friends spelled it in english - plus how it was spelt on the banners in hong kong at new year....
minor point - wasn't trying to make an issue...

For some reason, I always disliked Cantonese pronunciation which is the subject of this tread spells out, sounds like someone who's got no tongue - hate it!
Mandarin pronunciation is much "clearer" - though harder to sound right: Gong Xi Fa Cai
anyway, I thought this was pretty funny: Bong Smoke Fat Chic - from a westerner friend ;o)
