How do you deal with obstinate clients that are adamant about ripping off other sites.. Not only ripping them off, but the want an exact replica, just with different text. Clients like this make me loathe being a designer.
- jevad0
thats happened twice.
both times I told them to fuck off.
no amount of money is worth that shit.
- Rodimus790
exactly
- meok0
Well if you need to pay rent and eat, it sure beats selling crack.
- iSolve0
i fee your pain.
just explain to them how insanly lame it is to rip off someone's design, and that's why there are using you in the first place.
unique solution.

you just have to firm with them. I know I have had a couple of clients who have been like that and I basically told them to f**k off in the politest way possible :)

does anyone happen to know of any examples of sites that were replicated, and resulted in legal action, or being forced to be taken down? It'd be nice to show these people that ripping off other sites is a bad idea.. They seem to think its fantastic. What dolts.
- JazX0
depends on how much you need money hehehe ;)
- Pindawg0
why not do a mock site in photoshlop and show them how much they could be missing out on
- xrusos0
good thought Rod. perhaps start a new thread called, "site ripping illegal?"
and call for evidence of cases. clients just see it as an easy way to save cash. but if you can show them evidence that it ultimately is not cost effective, you'll speak their language.

Rip the site, get paid.. then start a thread here on NT (or bump this one) with the final version and the original, then we will all email them with derisive abuse, notify the originator and sign them up for hardcore gay spam.
its that simple!
- waynepixel0
hahahahahah
hardcore spam.

if you're paying bills and need the money, do what they want. if you're living at home and being fed by mommy and daddy, be picky and tell them that you need to build up your portfolio and stealing another's design will give you a bad name. Cause it will. You will have no more friends. We'll all hate you. You mother fu**ing asshole. God dammit you son of a bitch@!!!#$
sorry got carried away
- North_20
Don't do it, cause then ye be a pirate, and they aint no scoundrel worse than a pirate.
HA HAAARRRGH!!!
- tfs__mag0
actually unless the site they are ripping off is in the same business, or similar business as the client, I don't think there is much the law can do so long as no trademarked logos are infringed. I'd say if you can afford to let it go then give them the hard line. If you need to eat, you may need to swallow your professional pride and get paid. You can always leave that piece out of your portfolio.
- chach0
hey, at least they know what they want :P
- nick0
why not just rip it stylistically and make it your own? people do that every day and don't feel bad about it :)
- Donvitoviti0
1. Tell them they will get sued.
2. If they still want to... do it and never bring this up again.
3. Cut Client off.
- JamesEngage0
tell them to go and speak to the original people, might put it in a new light for them
- mcLeod0
find out what they actually like on the site they want to rip off. then use it as a starting point to build your own concepts.

if you really have to do it (but that is in the WORST case scenario), make a contract in which they will take responsibility for the sites layout.. you should avoid getting sued yourself.
but making a better proposal (could be a simple mockup in PS, as said before) is what we, designers, are here for.
to come up with ideas, and that's what we are paid for.
like Jason Kristofer said here before:
'Design is a good idea'.
good luck.
:)
