The way I animate with vectors in AE is making a solid and pasting paths from Illustrator into a mask. Then you can "shape tween" the mask. It doesn't have to be a solid either. It could be a mask on any layer.

thx, j_red.
czrock, the thing is that you can create quite complex actionscript-driven vector animations in Flash, that would take ages doing frame by frame. I asked if while rendering those animations into a mov/png file I would mantain that dynamic animation or just be able to use motion and shapte tweens...

OK - i may have stuck my foot in my mouf. If you're wanting your bg's transparent from flash, then you'll need to export png....that for sure doesn't read scripting.
If you're importing a flatened swf into AE, i'm doubting that reads scripting as well.
Exporting your flash as a quicktime .mov might read scripting, but i'm doubting that as well - though i'm not sure.

I did this music video with just using photoshop and AE plus FCP. Is this what you mean by vector animations.

exporting to qucktime allows actionscript [v5.0 syntax], but no alpha channel [at least I think so...].
I don't want to bring actionscript to AE. I want to make animations in Flash using it, export the result, and use it in AE....

hey unfit, there are a bunch of ways to get 'vector animations' into ae - it all ends up being video so truly being vector doesn't matter - things like the vegas plugin and vectorpaint allow for linear art which would appear as 'vector animations' although not vector...you can also key out an actor shot on a solid background and then give hime a solid color; this will create a one-color dood running around looking vectorized.
you can also animate in 3d and export as polygon shapes(flashEX in c4d, etc) or give the object 100% luminanace and animate it...these are all very popular techniques.p.s. thanks for all you as help

damn good ideas...thanks
- PuFFi0
if somebody could mail me good vector examples, thanks
- unfittoprint0
nice. very nice.
any tutorials about those 'alternative' techniques?
- quamb0
you can create complex vector anim in ae too, using expressions and what not.
3d progs are also aces for vector style anim.

j_red, what kind of syntax AE uses? anything similar to javascript pr something completely different?
And it seems that i should get my hands on a good manual... So, what's the best one around?
- brooke0
I would LOVE to animate my vectors...
- unfittoprint0
brooke, then you should try to get your stuff in AE... it's really photoshop with a timeline [ok, maybe a little more complex].
Even playing with the basics, the results are quite impressive...

there are several different ways, depending on the effect you want to get, most ae stuff you see though is either stills in ae 3d cell rendered or drawn frame by frame in illustrator then imported as a sequence...

where is the best place for tutorials?
- tymeframe0
Most vector animations i'll do in Flash, then export my movie as a PNG sequence. AE can import the sequence as a clip.
- pepe0
yeah cell shaded rendering out of 3d is a godsend
- unfittoprint0
thanks. Is Flash the 'weapon of choice' for all the vector animations one sees nowadays in work done in AE?
I though one could import directly swf to AE...
- JazX0
I would totally think that using Adobe Vector production tools would work easier with AE. Anyway that's just me. Seems that way with MX suite for Flash.

seems like flash tricks always end up needing to be customized, so people feel free sharing them - ae tricks are solely visual so people always use an effect and it ends up looking similar to where they stole it from...i don't know if that make sense but there are very few solid places to get info on this kind of stuff aside from tweaking around and asking around. as far as i know....
i can send some .aep file if anyone wants....
