Ok, if I have a DVD is there a way I can determine if the user slaps it into a PC dvd drive or a DVD player hooked up to a television.
And then depending on what kind of player redirect the viewer accordingly to something else.

Sorry... Didn't reply to your amil you sent me... I think you can put a autorun file in the DVD-ROM section of the DVD so that an app will run... of course when you play it on a tv, the dvd player will not see this and just run the movie.

James, would i be able to like take the short movie load it into like flash and add writing over it it that would appear on a computer dvd player and not on teh tv?

I reckon so...
When I worked on the Orbital DVD, I made a game which was supplied as a .EXE, and bascially this would load up when the disk was inserted...
I don't know a great deal more than that... you probably need to hunt out a site dedicated to it...
Also you may need ot find out about cross platform if this is needed? As the Orbital game only ran on PC

could the EXE communicate with the net?

yep definitely... you I'm sure you have a batch file on the disk called something like autoexec or autostart or something and it has stuff in it such as the .ico which displays the icon for the disk, and the file which you would like to open automatically...
The .exe, can basically be a flash exe so of course you can do all the network stuff, but of course you need to check they are online etc.
