Hey,
I'm going to buy a domain and i noticed somthing cool. With most companies i can buy a domain for around $30 a year.. Then there are the cheap hosting companies that offer a domain for $5 a year... Large price gap. Anyone have experience with this? Is it cheaper because they retain ownership too it or am i just untrusting and paranoid?
Thanks in advance.

they have a three year promotion going on now.... Free
cheap registering too.
there is no catches... pretty much they are a huge company that does huge companies website and are getting into the consumer market and are trying to gain your buisness for years to come.
anyway... i use them for some of my sites and they are great.

yeah, the deal is $5 a month but you have to pay yearly. So with a domain registration its $65 a year. Otherwise its $60 a year. Im just worried that if i decide to swiitch there is some wier hidden clause saying they own the domain and im just renting it or somthing crazy like that.

That 1and1 deal seems pretty sweet. Anyone else have experience with them? I have a couple of sites that need hosting... free seems like a pretty good price.

the actaul registration for a domain name costs $6. (for the majors - .com, .net, etc), so anyhting above that is strictly markup. Hence the ability for godaddy, etc to offer such a good price. They usually make money with the less known domains as well as selling hosting, etc.
I would say the best thing to look for when searching for a registrar / reseller is ICANN accredidation (says that they're the real thing, and accountable). and a user friendly management interface.
Things like registrar locking and auto-renew are always helpful as well.
I'm currently working on a registration site of my own, but for now, I'd reccommend my competitors.. registerfly or godaddy.
