Hey,
Does anyone know a good tutorial source for building flash based generators that throw random mc's or graphics on the stage, with various rotations, sizes, colours, etc. ?
I was playing around with a small one that the master himself Josh Davis made and ended up producing this, soon to be index page:
http://www.random.desirefordesig…I'm really interested in these and hope to make a few just for fun and build this "random" part of my site. Any links or sources would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

You nailed quite well in fact. You just create a function that uses the Color Object, the _x, _y, _rotation, _alpha, _xscale and _yscale of an attached movieclip. Change it randomly within slight increases, using a a for loop, where the most recent attached movie 'looks' to the previous MC to change its properties... use a setinterval if you want them to appear gradually...

my roommate made this:

it's purty...randomly generated number, color, and position of the elements
no tute but maybe you are interested...

You can ask my buddy Thierry from deekons.http://www.deekons.com/d...
He's a champ at those weird things.

I'd try and go off at a tangent if I was you, oterwise you;ll end up with somethnig that looks like everyone elses.

I use components to build all of my generative stuff - I'm working on a new "creative commons" based environment that shows how I build some of these - I have 13 written so far - mostly used for compositions on once-upon-a-forest.com
my new 2004 series of lectures is titled "dynamic abstraction" which is based off an essay I wrote, which will be published in John Maeda's new book... "creative code" -- this lecture will document a bunch of processes of working in this concept - which late spring will be available for download off of my site just like the "flow" lectures.

nice, Joshua. Any more info/link about Maeda's book?
thx in advance.

Looks like an good book, at least from the tiny thumbnails. I'm interested to see your component process, Josh. So far I haven't had any really good use for components other than a few 'lets see how this works' experiments. So far, I can't see where they would succed where a well defined class or set of classes wouldn't.
Particularly for this kind of random composition function -- I would have thought a Class structure that could be inhereted by any Movie Clip would do the trick.
Post the link to the goods when you get them finished.
Cheers.

here's a chunk in the middle of the presentation...

use the "spacebar" to re-gereate on most of the systems
and use the "left" and "right" arrow keys to move forward and backward through the presentation.
this shows how a few systems can be used to generate interesting patterns - I think the swarm behavior I was most surprised by as I worked on it.

very interesting.
the 'once-upon-a-forest' compositions are beautiful...

thanks a zillion for posting that part of the lecture. really, that's the best fucking thing that could have happened today.
loox awesome, as usual.
make sure you hit somewhere in nyc with this lecture!

Thanks, Josh.
The swarm stuff reminds me of some stuff I've been doing lately:

Click on the text to add 'tracers'. Like yours, there are vars to control stroke, colour, change frequency, ect.
This was evenutally used to 'scribble out' some text, which was brought into illustrator, printed on film, and hand-screenprinted for some posters. Hi tech to low tech.

very lovely.
ze frank was also doing something very similiar in a series of prints for CD covers I think.

which he was using on drawings he fed into flash.
all in all - it's a dope process to play with and produces amazing results

Damn that's nice. I hadn't seen it. The screenprints i did turned out really well, but his looks a lot more in-depth (mine is about 20 lines or so). Thanks for the link.
I'm in the design stage for a new site and am struggling with how to integrate my usual code design style in with a more dirty, indie aesthetic. the scribble thing was one of the first stabs at it.
