wow, thanks for saving me some headache - does it still delete the object if you do a movieClip.loadVariables(" ? Have you tried that - just wondering if it is specific to loadVariablesNum.

MX: you could use an external loop [setInterval for example] to check the movie loading data [swf, xml, mp3, jpeg, etc...].
MX2004: you can use the latest
MovieClipLoader object [haven't tried].

I've usually use a setInterval loop, just thought I was getting all tricky with MC.onData... I'm still just using MX.

ok, so this works:
function logIn() {
movieClip.loadVariables("url.php...
}
yourClip.onRelease = function (){
logIn();
};
movieClip.onData=function(){
yourScript;
}Thought you might be interested.

ok.
regarding variables I still prefer to use the Load Vars object. something like:
myVars = new LoadVars();
myVars.onLoad = function(sucess){
if(sucess){
doThis();
} else {
trace ("error!!");
}
}doThis= function () {
trace("sucess!!")
};//initiate
myVars.load("url.php?var=etc");stop();

so if(success) is valid, and onLoad is doing the same as onData?
