I just bought an emachines m5312 couple weeks ago and I love it. The only drawback is that the video card isn't stellar. Tons of extras, check it out:

thanks for the suggestions - for now ill stick with my mac desktop. any further suggestions would be great - Mac should really make a pc clone of their tibook - they'd make a killing.

Hey nick, hows the ibook performing? I wanna go for the 12"Pb but christ, the 12" ibook is 1000$ less..

I recently bought a Compaq x1000 series laptop. It's: thin, light, mobile, 15.4" wide screen and runs photoshop and dreamweaver with 512mb of ram pretty good. The Centrino stuff really helps with battery life and I haven't noticed to much of a slowing with the 1.4ghz processor compared to my 2.4ghz desktop pc.
I too would have gone with a Mac if I could afford one.

i love it man.. but i cant really tell you if its that much faster than the pbook.. as i havent ever used one..
its pretty quick though.. way faster than my 1.4ghz p4 desktop..
only program where its kinda slow.. is fontbook.. and i only have a little over 1000 fonts...
does anybody know if there are better programs out there to manage your fonts??

gateway has some cool laptops. they have a 17.1" with great specs and includes a dvd rewriter for $1,899. if you buy it online make sure you chat with a live sales rep and tell them to take off the carrying case and other extras they automatically tag on.

be very careful, and I accept no responsibility for this, although it worked on my ibook 600 and 800 with the radeon card. :D

that emachine one looks pretty sweet actually...

brundlefly,
it says the Powerbook supports dual display. Does that mean the laptop screen plus another one or can I hook up 2 cinema displays? The later would be nice.
- Derek20
id go with a 15" powerbook
ive used the new ibooks and powerbooks extensivly and the powerbooks are much faster....
- brundlefly0
powerbooks can only hook up one digital display, but it isnt mirrored so I get the 1440 on my laptop and the 1680 on the 20 inch....
and yes powerbooks are much much peppier than the ibook.
the 15 is nice, but the 17 is god
- Derek20
i prefer the 15.
the 17 was too big for me... im going around town on my skateboard or bike, and im mobile... the 17 was just too awkard for that purpose.
:S it just depends i guess... im on a 20 inch external like, 75% of the time...
- Derek20
if your gonna be doing most of your work on the laptop itself.. then go for the 17 inch...

On december 11th, I bought a new Medion 17inch laptop. It has 1.2 gigs of ram plus 64gig independent graphics ram. an intel 4 2.6 ghz processor, dvdrom/cdrw drive. on board compactflash/memeorystick/smartc... reader. firewire, 4 usb, serial and wireless built nin.
great computer with enough processing power for me to run the largest of graphics files....and the final price? 2,200 CAN.
- Derek20
that sounds like a thick machine man.... is that like 3 inches thick?
- gabriel_pc0
jevad- yeah, for what comes with it it's awesome. There's no way I'm ever buying a desktop again after this. Only programs I really need an extra monitor for is Director and Flash and that's no trouble to set up with the laptop.
- Derek20
Director is dead!!!
