how do you force a (usually!) osx mac to startup using the installed classic environment or from a os9 cd?
ive tried holding down c, with a os9 cd in the drive...but its not working
ive tried Option-Command-Shift-Delete during startup (to: "Bypass primary startup volume and seek a different startup volume") but all i get is a flashing folder ' ? ' icon...
if i take any fingers off the keys it trys to go straight into osx.. how do i select to start up from os9 or the cd i have inside the drive??
im having no luck here!
can anyone help?

its an oldish imac crt. came with os9.
its a friends who wants it sorting. thought it would be easy!

you should just be able to switch the startup disk in sys prefs to os9 and then reboot.

are you getting the flashing folder thingy? or are you in 9 trying to get to X or vice versa?
if its the folder well you've most likely cross linked a few system files - a real bitch that usually involves reinstalling X , your drives are ok so you can hook the machine to another mac and book it as a drive (hold down T while restarting) and back all the files up
if its just the 9 to X thing then you've got to go to startup discs in thecontrol panels menu and choose "system" folder - not "system folder" thats the 9 one.
other than that yr f#$%d! jk good luck i feel your pain

someone sent me this link today http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/kern… follow some of the links there,....might be helpful.
I was having (and still am) kernel panics every time I started to launch OS9 just to use Quark and view internal email at the office.

FYI
sometimes burning an OS9 CD fails
so make sure you've got a legit OS9 CDif so - another thing is if the OS9 CD is not the one that came with the iMac it won't boot.
the first version of OS9 might not have hardware support for that iMac if it's newer than the OS9 CD
I've run into that issue before - and it's a pain.
You need the original iMac OS9 CD or an OS9 CD from a newer Macintosh machine.

boot from an OS X cd instead
