I've been asked to do some newspaper ads. I haven't done much print work and none for newspapers. Is there anything I need to know when working on these?

well, I'm assuming they use different style inks and what not.

ask for specs from the publications.
- jox0
Yes, what rasko said. They probably know what you're supposed to know when you're doing what it is that you don't know but are supposed to.

They can't handle animated gifs!
Um.. i've done some stuff for newsprint in the past, and aside from the size, I was never made aware of any other constraints. Just remember that the resolution is fairly dire, and you shouldn't get too enthusiastic with your colouration..

Don't use too much solid black in... the usually have a limit in their specs. This is to prevent people doind all black pages and making the reverse side of the page unreadable. Don't use type that is too fine or reversed type that is fine. The final screen will be something like 65 lpi so keep that in mind (coarse halftones).

newspaper printing is the equivalent of using a potato and ink.

be very careful!
often the paper is far from being 'white' and you should keep your message as clean and clear as possible because papers are mostly already cluttered by nature.
and take into account that blacks and colours do not reproduce as elegant!
i used to be a press-photographer and learned you cannot deliver pics with little contrast.
good luck!

to get an idea what newspapers look like on a daily bases (yes, daily!) go to this amazing site:

beware:
these are screenshot and downloadable pdf's, so they are not how they would look printed! at least you get an idea of the clutter/layout etc..
