Pshop - edit patterns?

just curious....I've defined some patterns in photoshop. How can I go back and edit them, without retiling the pattern, selecting the initial tile, editing it, then resaving the tile?
I figured Pshop saves the tile somewhere and I could just open that tile, edit, and redifine, but I couldn't find them in the program files folder, only presets...does this make sense?

here's one way to do it...there may be a better way. in ps7, go to the brush palette and click the small arrow in the tab. select 'preset manager' and then go to your patterns (command 5). if you mouse over the pattern you can see the original patterns size. make a canvas that size and fill with that pattern and you have the original tile again. hope this helps.

there probably is some way of doing it with PS 7.0 or CS but I would just remake the pattern.
