Hi, I need help making a fancy menu work. It seems simple but its just beyond me right now.
The problem resides at http://www.unidentifiedmedia.com…
The SWF is a menu that only works once, I need it to be able to pop every time someone rolls over it.
The FLA is there to if you can help ill give you a shiny nickel. (cdn). If you know of any other way to make it so when you roll into a menu it dosent screw up the parent movie clip.

should be just a matter of pointing it to the correct movie within yor timeline right? I' m confused.

I had a look to your file. Before getting into any specifics regarding your slide function I should advice you the following:
#1. Don't use 20 different buttons when you can use 1 movie clip acting as a button with different values. Make a component where you can change image/file loading path, color, etc...
#2 don't use on(press) etc... those events are deprecated, call them directly on an action layer [after naming your instance] like: myButton.onPress(){ doThis(); }
#3 use the new MovieClip events (instead of the onClip ones) together with my #2 advice you'll have concentrated the code in ONE layer instead of separating it everywhere in the file..
#4 Trace the f*ck out of your script when you find a problem, see where the codes stop functioning as intended.
Do this changes and if you still have difficulties post here. Using the new code, we'll make your life easier and your file shorter. good luck.

UNFITTOPRINT
First off thanks!
Second:
Before you replied i SORTA figured it out but its buggy as hell. The code again is in the same place. http://www.unidentifiedmedia.com…
IF there are any cleanups or checks i could use to at least make it work with out occasionaly resetting its self that would be helpfull, other wise...
I have a feeling im going down a long Actionscript learning road. Do you have any books you suggest that could help me on my way. I already have Visual Quickstart Pro Flash MX Advanced but it referes to all the depreciated methods you said not to use. Anything more current that covers debugging, modern methods for accesing movie clips and perhaps a handfull of tutorials and hand holding walk-alongs?

unfittoprint, he's a true pro.

There can be only one:
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obido…There are already some books about the new version of Actionscript [2.0] used in MX 2004 [new methods and usage], but I would probably wait untill O'Reilly releases an updated version of 'The Definitive Guide'.
Anyway, here are some links to MX 2004's Actionscript 2.0 books:

Thanks a bunch for your suggestions. I hadent even though to trace some variables and I got it working now *perfectly.
Ihe final result can be seen at :
http://www.unidentifiedmedia.com…I'm definatly going to get a book or two. Do you recomend upgrading to 2004?
Again, thanks for the help.
* Perfection is theoretically impossible no claims or attepmts at perfection were made.

Upgrading to 2004? In the end you will definetely need to... so I don't see no problem with it (altough still a little bit buggy...).
oh, and congrats for the problem solving...
