does anyone know a way to prevent unauthorized copying and distribution of a flash projector exe file downloaded from a web server?

There are some workarounds to prevent SWFs from being downloaded from your site or at least preventing them from working once they are but preventing and EXE from being copied is unimaginable to me :)

copying and distribution are going to happen (if your lucky)
but you can take steps to make what people pass around useless
you could build into it a serial key
or put a time stamp in it, (have it connect to a server for time)
and repackage, hourly, monthly, weekly, daily till you get the security your after

I guess you could put a password prompt at the start - the have the EXE go to a location on your server to check if the password matches. Then you just change the file on your server every so often. This would however prevent people from using the EXE unless they have an internet connection.

if you've got the budget for it ($140 i think) this is a very useful app for that sort of thing

the only thing i can seriously think of requires an internet connection and online user auth.

If you figure that one out you may want to pass on the info to the record companies.

can't say much on the .exe distribution thing. i'll look into it.
but here is what i use in my .swf's.
a = preloader._url;
if (preloader._url.slice(0, 4) != "http"){
trace ("i see you");
for (n=1; n>0; n++){
trace ("sucker");
}
}put that code in the first frame of your movie. MAKE SURE YOU COMMENT IT OUT WHILE YOU ARE TESTING LOCALLY. once your file is done and ready to put on the web, uncomment the code, publish and upload. if the .swf is run in the browser, no problem, things are great. they try to run it as a standalone outside of the browser, it locks their computer in an infinite loop.
cheers and good luck.

honda if you stick a getURL and get it to close a window using javascript it will stop any user reading the code in swf decompilling software i.e. you have millions of IE windows opening up and tring to close themselves...
I use this at the moment.. did have a lot of emails saying why had i done this... erm let me think!!
this all until the programers stick in a autorun feature and a feature to block getURL script..
