i've found more than enough info online to get started. maybe there are book recommendations at http://www.php.net

go with a wrox book. get one of their beginner books if you are new to programming or one of their professional books if you've been programming for a while and pick up new languages easily.

the programmer at work says it's easiest to work with and he's been pushing to change our company site to php from asp for the next redesign. and i have plans, lots of them

good choice. Use the worx php professional book. But use the web, to find tutorials too.

i haven't gotten into any of the php books personally as when i got into php it was because i could not afford any other option.
on that note, php is just as good as all the other web-based scripting languages in the game. They all have their pro's and cons, and at the end of the day it becomes personal choice, cost and technical requirements.
I can't personally reccommend any books as I haven't read any on PHP. Get VERY aaquainted with http://www.php.net as it's the mecca of all that is php. I usually have it open in my taskbar somewhere.
Also, try to keep up wiht php newsand tutorials at
http://php.weblogs.com/
http://www.phpfreaks.com/
http://www.phpdeveloper.org/
http://www.devshed.com/
http://www.devarticles.com/On top of that, NT's own Mike Buzzard has co-written what seems to be a damned good book:
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obido…
I've met Mike personally, and I can say that he's a damned good guy and he knows his shit.I've also heard good things about this book:
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obido…And finally, i reccommend getting into OOP which php has pretty good support for (and improving with php5). HEre's a semi decent intro to it, although i reccommend getting your head wrapped around php a bit before jumping in:
