In Flash MX 2004, does writing script in Normal mode exist anymore? I guess Macromedia either hid it or doesn't want designers using the software anymore.

Believe me, the sooner you start writing code in Advanced mode, the better. A lot of the OOP syntax (object oriented programming) can only be writen in Adv. mode.

yep.. it's gone...
.. I went to a little macromedia shindig here in phx about 3 weeks ago...
... one of the first things the macromedia guys admitted to was that advanced mode is your only option.
Also - any new components (if you ever used them) that are new to 2004 cannot be reverse engineered or editted (redundant?). You're given a few color options etc - but there's no customizing.
Apparently, Macromedia 'hired' a former Art Director of Nike (the macromedia guy even dropped a name... but I forget)... and this Nike guy basically decided on the three color options and style of the new UNEDITABLE components. I'm not sure if they're trying to start a web standard or lose customers.
One last thing from the macromedia man: "Macromedia now suggests that it's better if you DON'T place all your code on the first frame.
I'm still a bit confused - but boy is onClipEvent handy. :)

Yeah, I use onclipevent all the time, but what they just don't get is that some people should not be specializing in action script programming. I can do some things and make simple games but mostly just get my interfaces to work right. Eliminating functionality from software is ASS-BACKWARDS.

They replaced Normal Mode with BEHAVIORS
lame

PS.
2004 can lick my balls on how slow it loads
Photoshop loads 2 times faster than Dreamweaver or Flash.
wtf

I know Macromedia now requires class definitions in separate .as files, but why not encourage all movie code on the first frame?

they're trying to make it more like a real application development tool like vb. they've got soooo far to go yet./

Normal mode???
You don't seriously miss that surely...??
In MX it was already virtually impossible to do anything of any calibre with normal mode.
The reason for using seperate AS files for classes is that they must be defined before the 1st frame, in the SWF itself so to speak.....
The new components CAN be modified, EVERYTHING can...BUT it involves fannying around with the classes....which is not advised unless you really know what you are doing...

onClipEvent() for movies and on() for buttons are deprecated ways to control events in MX. Use the new events for buttons and MC, that can be writen in a single action layer instead of separating it within every instance on Stage...

and you don't have to be an AS expert just to write your code in advanced mode. Most of us learned javascript when html 3.2 wasn't enough, well the idea is incredibly similar (more than one would think as actionscript and javascript are blood related).
Or you could just hire unfit to do all your coding.

enobrev 's right (except for the hiring part....), I've been returning for some javascript coding after learnin AS, because of its similarities in syntax. And it's funny that AS actually made me more open to learn PHP due to the necessity of backend solutions regarding some sites...
