Just wondering for those already running Q6 --- is there a save option enabling backward compatibility, so users still in 4 can open files made in 6?
If you're feeling compelled to make an inDesign comment, please hold off (client thing).
Thanks in advance.

nope.

Scar ... so docs created in 6 are NOT openable in 4? No option to enable this?

i'm not ABSOLUTELY positive since i'm still running 5, but our instructors at school warned us about it and said that it was now becoming an industry issue.
(not a huge issue or anything, but it's annoying)
- Dolan0
Yah. Certainly an issue as it means that studios can't go to 6 if their clients need to open the files and are still on 4/5. Blows. Anyone else?

I don't know how close the result would be, but you could save for 5 from 6 and then save for 4 from 5.
I dispise Quark.

Yah, it's a dog but I'm hoping 6 will make life a bit better, but unless clients, vendors, etc can open the files can't switch. Did anyone actually buy 5? Cy ... you sure you can save for 5 in 6?

Have had it for two weeks now, and so far it hasnt been a pleasant experience - keep switching back to 4.1 instead. And yes, you can save for 5 in 6.
- Dolan0
Interesting. Jkob --- why? Basically I'm considering shelling out $1500+ for two copies for the studio just so we can do away with using classic. What are the other unpleasantries you've been experiencing?

My complaints are really not valid ones - they´ve moved a couple of things around, and I get lost in the menus - but seriously; the only two reasons I've had for standing up for Quark in the battle versus InDesign has been that was faster and I knew every little corner of the program. 6.0 doesnt appear to be anywhere as fast altho I havent tried it with more than a 2 page document yet.

You definitely can't save for 4 in 6 tho right? Definitely requires 5? (I never ungraded to 5 ... still running 4.1 in classic mode).

I'm curious as to why you didn't (or did you) consider leaving Quark for InDesign?
Not trying to create a macro vs. adobe thread but I've used Quark 4 and 5 and tried out InDesign recently loved it, AND its cheaper.
Personally, I hate Quark.
- scarabin0
quark isn't made by macromedia.
- monkeyshine0
oops..my pho-paw. Too bad though...if Quark were made my Macromedia it would be a better program.

I have a significant client that requires Quark --- they providing all their templates for master packaging formats via Quark masters (DVD packages and merchandising materials). And the e-mechanical files are sent around the world for international adaptations. They are all still OS9 Q4.x, and I would like to move to 6. Hence the thread. Would love to have the time to experiment with and learn inDesign but not possible for this situation.

givin this a Mon morn bump to see if anyone in the workplace has any input

Appears that it will only save back to 5, not 4. Maybe if people complain enough, they'll add a patch.

Quark 6 will save as version 5.
Quark 5 will save as version 4.
Quark 6 will not save as version 4.I'm sure extensis or ALAP will come out with a $100 plug-in to convert the files back and fourth.
Build your stuff in 6 and spend 10 minutes in classic converting them from 5 to 4.
Quark blows.
