Industry Standard and extremely effective: Sound Forge, which was owned by Sonic Foundry and is now owned by Sony. It all depends on what you want to do and how you want to do it. It's difficult to be general when referring to audio production and editing. There are so many in's and out's. Sound Forge is not a sequencer, however, so to layout a total song or for ellaborate loop development there are a bunch of different sequencer options. Cubase, Logic, Pro Tools, Sonar, Acid Music (Sony), Cakewalk, even Vegas Video, Cool Edit or Premiere. Again, it all depends what you want to do. And with that being said, those sequencers aren't really meant for instrumentation production. You need to either use some sort of soft synth triggered by MIDI or tie in hard instruments for recording and re-sequencing. You can also use hard samplers as well. Sound is infinite. :)

I presented a loaded question. I just want to be able to edit sound for loop purposes. web and video.

If you just need if for afore mentioned stuffs it's gonna be the easiest.

http://mediasoftware.sonypicture… Vegas Video. it's easy to use and integrates both Audio and Video. You can also upgrade for it to include the DVD series. Trust me, it's a winner! :)

record your sound, import into sound forge for compression and maximization, export to a sequencer applicatiion such as Vegas, Acid or Premiere and then tweak away. http://mediasoftware.sonypicture…

go for steinberg wavelab, maybe.
recently tried sony's sound forge 7, but it sucks, compared to wavelab. pretty name, sucky productivity.
- JazX0
whaaaa? Wavelab is very nice, in fact anything from Steinberg is great, but in no way does it compare to Sound Forge 7.0. You need to check the options bro. :)
