remember it is as important to protect every aspect of the biodiversity in the sea and not just the whales. The issue of persistent contamination and shifting water temps. due to global warming will have a disasterous impact on all aspects of the foodchain. The basic principle being if you remove any aspect of the food chain theis will impakt on the whales - effectivly removing or poisoning their foodsource. Whales may be cute but they cant survive in dead oceans.
It will take a broad shift in political policy integration, human activity and increased education and appreciation of the oceans (and other natural systems) if they are to be saved. Many things are working against that primarily things like Russia and the US not signing up to the Kyoto principle effectively maintaining the 'business-as-usual' attitude. people need to start thinking differently...

exactly. the point being that whales are at the top of the food chain, under them is a long list of toxic species, including the fish we eat and the micro organisms that the fish feed on. the orcas bring our attention to the scale of toxidity in our waters, as they have compiled themselves heavily in their systems. from the bottom up.

and at this point, it is felt that they can't be saved. it is just a matter of time actually before they are wipped out. they actually discussed (scientific panel) cement capping the ocean floor around puget sound however that will not work as it will activate toxins that have settled on the ocean floor. anyways the point is that our ocean is in trouble and the orcas are taking a beating from it.

consider them to be the warning sign. even worse, male orcas do not have the protective enzime in their systems as the females do to surviving the toxins in their bodies and die off easily. in fact, in 2001 they nearly lost ALL the breeding orcas. if that should happen again ... anyways that is it for me. i am out of town for a while. take care.
