want to do some research into the role of the designer to benefit society and the effect of design/advertising on society.
Done some research and there are tonnes of books, to many to read them all.
already read no logo, but i want something more about design movements with political agendas. ie. the modernists were all socialists until the moved to america...
Does anyone know the title of some good books on this topic. Thanks in advance.

design itself is the evil. is the logic son of a monstrous dehumanized system called capitalism. we are all participants. in a perfect world (means no capitalism at all) design would never exist. design/form/apparence is just another invented-need. like cell phones and palms.
and yeas, i am a designer. and i can sleep at night!

design is needed, how else do you describe everything that surrounds us?

All you can do in this world is find your niche. I've seen how the world treats artists, and I'm probably better off bending over for clients.

There was a link in the NTB to an essay by a former director of Metadesign (I think) that discussed his realisation that the work he'd been doing and the design system we work in was fundamentally wrong, or something like that. I never made it to the end of the essay but you might like it, if you can find it.

Victor Papenaks (sp?) "Design for the Real world" Pretty old now but might be worth a look.
Bit soap-boxy at times.

In a perfect world, MOST of the design we see in our world is unneccessary, but we tend to take for granted designs that save lives or drastically improve it, like subway signage that is clear and understandable even if you don't speak the language, or well laid out control panels for cars, planes, etc. that can prevent human errors. Design ain't just about beauty or hype. I think there are too many advert designers on here, me included.
