How do I make paths from a dashed stroke, but keeping the dashes appearance?
(Illustrator 9)
I may be simple, but i cant figure it out...

haha funny, haven't noticed the thread "Hey guys"..

for the strokes pallette, expand it to its max size (hit the double arrow in the tab).
then on the bottom there should be six text boxes at the bottom...they control the length of dashes and spaces of a line.

i'm listening for other opinions here, but as far as i know - you can't preserve dashed lines once converted to paths.

yeah, but i think kodap wants to outline the dotted line (convert to paths or expand the stroke) and maintain the dashed appearance. i've run into this before too.
- kodap0
yeah, that's the prblem, there should be the "expand appearance" option for this..

yeah u used to be able to do that !!!

you can outline the dashes can't you? to become shapes instead of the dashed line?
- kpl0
oops...nm.
- kodap0
no.. I may seem dumb with this, but I can't find the way to do it..

can you send me the file?
or any file with that problem?
- kodap0
every files.. this may be illustrator PC problem, don't know...

ive had this problem too. this reminds me of the problem ive had with outlining a path when brushes are involved.
i did find a way to fix the brush one though. its pretty easy: save as .eps, open in freehand (dont do anything) save again as eps in freehand (overwrite), then open back up in illustrator, whala!
maybe this will work with dotted stroke too...

just a sec. 4cy... saving

ER, to convert brushes to paths, go to object>expand appearance and it should do the trick for you.

you could also make a pattern brush that looks like a dashed line. then expand that.

now i dont have a reason to own freehand :(
thanks testpilot

mevermind, I'll leave it to the guys at the print office, they said it was no problem about keeping the stroke as it is.
and they have freehand as well, so I told them the trick that ER adviced.Thank U all.
