I've been working as a Web Application Developer sub-contractor for the past 5 months at this company. I've been sending them bi-weekly invoices, they're been paying promptly and everything's been great.
So this morning I find out that if you bill more than $30K (which I have) in Canada you're required to charge HST.
Do I need to register a business or should I beg them to bring me on staff?
I'd really like to avoid registering a company if possible because I'll be moving to the US within 6 months and marrying my fiance - fiance visa is currently being processed by the INS.
So what should I do?

shit you might, watch your ass at all costs. maybe wait with more billing until your fiance clears everything up.

Is this the first year you are going to make more then 30,000?
If so and you're just realizing now that you'll be making more you really should call and get yourself a GST number and start invoicing for GST on all upcoming projects. They'll will give you some leeway if you didn't charge it for everyone this year.
You just have to call a number and you don't have to register a business. You can use your business name along with your name but you don't have to pay to register your business to get the number.

I've already made more than $30K from self-employed work this year - which means I'm over the limit.
Probably won't send them anymore invoices until I get this situation figured out - hopefully this week.

Update: Company offered me an employee position which I accepted.
Did want to get into the hassle of registering a business in Canada if I'm only going to be here for a few more months.

yo, you should be registered if you are pulling in that kinda cash.
you should also be collecting gst/pst
if you make over 30K a year with your business you will be required to pay out gst/pst/hst to the government
